Advertising and Marketing Communications Management Program
Formerly known as Advertising - Integrated Marketing Communications
This program prepares students for an exciting career in marketing communications. You will be trained for careers in the creative or media aspects of the advertising business, including print, broadcast and digital media.
Careers are also available in sales promotion, public relations, and event marketing and planning. All instructors are active in their area of marketing communications expertise and bring the latest applications and experiences into the classroom. One faculty member is the author of three textbooks on marketing communications.
The most up-to-date marketing communications facilities in the province, including an Apple-based computer lab and an industry standard video studio, support the program. You will have access to the latest industry software including MAC OS X applications, Microsoft Office, and the Adobe Suite of applications. The third year includes some specialized training in social and interactive marketing communications.
Our program is a recognized leader in Ontario. Our students have excelled in numerous video competitions and are consistent winners at the annual Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition and the BDC Case Challenge. A team of students won the gold medal in the BDC Case Challenge (a national college marketing competition) in 2010 and a silver medal in 2011.
This program offers two field placements that provide students with practical experience. You will be exposed to the complete realm of marketing communications: advertising (creative), advertising (all traditional media), direct response and digital advertising (online and mobile), social media communications, and media sales. You will write copy and design layouts for print media; write, produce, and edit video in broadcast media; prepare ads for the digital media; and prepare advertising campaigns that embrace all elements of marketing communications. Students learn how to exploit interactive tools to develop customer focused interactive (web-based) marketing programs. Hands-on practical experience is gained from our innovative communications agency model (6th semester) where students assume agency staff roles and devise integrated campaigns to meet client needs.
The skills learned are adaptable to any industry. Graduates find employment in numerous areas including advertising and marketing communications agencies, public relations, print and broadcast media, technology, manufacturing and service companies, and the not-for-profit sector.
Occupations include: Copywriter, Media Sales Representative, Media Planner, Account Executive, Digtial Media Strategist, Marketing Coordinator, Promotion Coordinator, Event Planner, Event Marketing Coordinator, and Marketing Communications Coordinator.
